ജപ്പാനിൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ഉണ്ടായ 6.8 തീവ്രതയുള്ള ശക്തമായ ഭൂചലനത്തിൽ മരിച്ചവരുടെ എണ്ണം 34 ആയി ഉയർന്നു. തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ജപ്പാനിലെ കുമാമോട്ടോ മേഖലയിലാണ് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ മരണങ്ങൾ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഭൂചലനത്തെ തുടർന്ന് തകർന്ന ഷോപ്പിങ് സെന്ററിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ കുടുങ്ങിയവർക്കായുള്ള തിരച്ചിലും രക്ഷാപ്രവർത്തനവും തുടരുകയാണ്.
നാലായിരത്തിലധികം രക്ഷാപ്രവർത്തകരാണ് വിവിധ മേഖലകളിൽ രക്ഷാദൗത്യത്തിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഭൂചലനത്തെ തുടർന്ന് ഏകദേശം 9,000 പേരെ ദുരിതാശ്വാസ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റിപ്പാർപ്പിച്ചു.

ഭൂചലനത്തെ തുടർന്ന് 30,000-ത്തിലധികം വീടുകളിൽ വൈദ്യുതി വിതരണം ഇതുവരെ പൂർണമായി പുനഃസ്ഥാപിക്കാനായിട്ടില്ല. ദുരിതാശ്വാസ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലുള്ളവരിൽ ഏകദേശം 30 ശതമാനവും മുതിർന്ന പൗരന്മാരാണ്. കടുത്ത ചൂടിനെ തുടർന്ന് ആരോഗ്യപ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാനാണ് എയർ കണ്ടീഷണറുകൾ അടിയന്തരമായി വിതരണം ചെയ്യുന്നതെന്ന് അധികൃതർ അറിയിച്ചു.

In a major boost to the state's disaster monitoring capabilities, Kerala has commissioned 51 new Automated Weather Stations (AWS) to track real-time weather parameters, including rainfall, wind speed, temperature, and humidity.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and IIT Ropar. Speaking to Metbeat News, Dr. Sekhar Kuriakose, Member Secretary of KSDMA, stated that the project was executed as part of the Chief Minister’s 100 Day Action Plan to strengthen disaster vulnerability monitoring across the state.
Strategic Placement in Schools
The newly installed weather stations are primarily situated in selected public schools governed by the General Education Department. Priority was given to schools located in high risk disaster zones and areas with limited coverage from existing Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) monitoring networks.
The technical implementation was led by Annam.ai (Center of Excellence in AI for Agriculture) at IIT Ropar.
Multi-Purpose Data Integration
The real-time data collected by these stations will be integrated directly into the KSDMA’s early warning systems, ensuring seamless access for all state government departments. Key emergency services including local self-government bodies, the Police, and Fire & Rescue Services will also receive immediate updates.
Beyond disaster management, the project offers several additional benefits:
Academic Use: Schools hosting the stations can utilize the data for educational and research activities.
IMD Sharing: While the data will be shared with the India Meteorological Department in real time, current norms prevent IMD from using AWS data for its official baseline forecasts.
Expanding Weather Networks
Kerala currently operates around 150 automatic weather and rain gauges managed by the IMD. Additionally, a much larger network of automated stations is currently being established across the state under the Union Ministry of Agriculture's WINDS (Weather Information Network Data System) project.
In a related development, the KSDMA confirmed that special funds have been allocated from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund to establish a dedicated disaster risk monitoring system tailored specifically for the landslide-prone Wayanad district.
